Inspect hoses for any softness, cracking, or bulging, and have your radiator checked for clogs or leaks if it’s been more than a year since your last inspection.
Battery and Charging System
Heat is harder on batteries than cold, and a battery that’s been slowly degrading all summer can fail without warning the moment you’re relying on it for a long trip. Have your battery load-tested rather than just checking that it starts the car in your driveway — a battery can start an engine and still be too weak to make it through a full day of driving with the A/C running constantly.
Tires
Check tire pressure when tires are cold, and inflate to the number on your door jamb sticker, not the number on the tire’s sidewall. Hot Arizona asphalt combined with underinflated tires is one of the most common causes of blowouts on long highway drives. While you’re at it, check tread depth and look for uneven wear that might indicate an alignment issue, and don’t forget to check your spare tire’s pressure and condition too.
Brakes
If you’re driving through mountain terrain — heading toward Flagstaff, Payson, or Sedona — your brakes will see more use on the downhill stretches than they typically do around town. Have your brake pads, rotors, and fluid checked before a trip that involves any significant elevation change, since worn brakes combined with extended downhill grades is a genuinely dangerous combination.
Air Conditioning
This isn’t a comfort item in an Arizona summer — it’s a safety item. A/C failure during a desert drive can turn a road trip into a heat-related medical emergency, especially with kids or pets in the car. Have your A/C system checked for refrigerant levels and proper function well before you leave, not after you notice it’s not blowing cold on the highway.
Fluids Across the Board
Beyond coolant, check engine oil level and condition, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Long highway drives at sustained speed put more continuous strain on these systems than typical daily driving does, and Arizona heat accelerates fluid breakdown across the board.
Belts and Wiper Blades
Arizona’s UV exposure and heat age rubber components faster than almost any other climate in the country. Have your serpentine belt inspected for cracking or glazing, and replace wiper blades if they’re showing any cracking or streaking — you may not expect rain on your trip, but dust storms and sudden monsoon activity are both realistic possibilities depending on your route and the time of year.
Lights and Wipers
Check that all headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals are functioning, especially if any part of your drive will happen at night or through a dust storm, when visibility matters most.
Emergency Kit
Even with a fully inspected vehicle, Arizona’s long stretches of remote highway mean you should carry water, a basic tool kit, a phone charger, a flashlight, and your roadside assistance information. If you’re driving through remote desert sections, extra water for both passengers and the radiator is a smart addition.
